Mobile shelving is a type of cabinet with powerful storage capacity. It is a form of high-density filing equipment, and can be defined as follows: a rack fitted with rollers on the base of a double-sided, multi-column fixed shelving unit, which moves in a straight line along small guide rails laid on the floor, so that several units can be brought together or spread apart as required.
There are two types, manual and electric. Manual units are further divided into hand-cranked and push-along types, and push-along units into rail-mounted and cantilever types. Travel can be transverse or longitudinal. The system turns fixed aisles into movable ones, greatly increasing the archive storage capacity per unit area of a room, though it also places higher demands on floor load capacity: 600 kg per square metre.
Mobile shelving is used mainly in the reference rooms, archives and sample rooms of government bodies, enterprises and institutions to store books and materials, archives, financial vouchers and goods. Compared with conventional bookcases, bookshelves, storage racks and filing racks, it offers greater capacity and better organisation. The contact surfaces between columns are fitted with buffers and magnetic sealing strips, the top has a dust cover and the base a rat-proof device. Each column is equipped with a safety limit brake and an anti-tip device, and the outer columns have locks for locking the whole unit. The transmission is precision-machined and uses precision bearings for smooth, flexible movement, and shelf spacing can be adjusted freely as required. It is essential equipment for high-density storage.
